Is Google Maps Cleaning Up Abbreviated Street Addresses?
Yesterday an interesting thread popped up in the Local Search Forum asking if Google has decided to automatically expand the abbreviated addresses listed in Google Maps. I checked several queries and all of them showed me unabbreviated street addresses. For example, road spelled out vs Rd., Circle vs Cir, Street vs Str. West vs W, and so on. But my last query showed Google did indeed continued to abbreviate the street addresses, probably when they were too long to fit properly. Here are screen shots of three sets of queries, but I did many many more: Dr is Drive and I am honestly not sure why there is not enough room to spell that out completely? In any event, it would be cleaner if Google did expand all abbreviations. Waze has an interesting page on how they handle these abbreviations for Text To Speech, by the way.
