Poll: Can You Build Links That Are Not Spam In Google's View?

The term link 'building' is what has led people down the wrong path. If you are 'building' links, that asserts that you have 100% control over the formation of the link. For a link to pass SEO value it should be editorial, therefore the editor of the website should have control over any potential links (not you). In my definition of 'control' I'm including the decision of whether to link or not. If money changes hands explicitly for the link - then that link is advertorial and not editorial. This is because the editor of the content would not have placed the link, were it not for the money. If you pay someone for content or a feature but you don't mention anything about links (not even that you want one), then any links which occur naturally from the editor can be considered editorial.
