Lessons Learned by an Over-Optimizer

Congratulations on your first YouMoz post! I've spent quite a lot of time undoing this problem for clients who made the same mistake and have learned quite a few lessons along the way. One lesson is that it isn't so much the number of instances as the use of natural language. I have seen pages where a relatively high number of keyword instances ranks well, as long as the language is natural, and the term does not feel "over worked" within the relative length of the text. Likewise, there are other pages where you have to take a long hard look at yourself and ask the question: "Would I seriously use that phrase more than once in 300 words?" Another very important thing to remember is that keyword terms need to meet the criteria for acceptable use.
