I don't think links on other sites hosting malware, or banned sites, have a negative impact on your site JUST because these sites link to you - or some would have a field day. Some other relationship would need to be implied IMO. Google can't just hand a poison network to someone - it would be too valuable in that you could harm a competitor site IMO. I am a fan of very light optimization on page and in internal links - backed up from external inbound links from 'real sites'. I think it's better using your internal links to rank category pages rather than single pages - less chance of looking as if you are trying to manipulate rankings, and it certainly works, for instance, with big news media sites. Sitewide links in your footer don't seem to have much of a positive impact but it depends on the site it seems - however, lots of links in your footer might be seen as a negat...
