Does Switching From Subdomains to Subfolders Improve Rankings?

I’m actually looking into this for a couple of clients as we speak but all of the conversations seem to be focused on the concept of a subdomain/directory based on the ability to pass authority. I’m actually trying to find an answer from another angle – ‘topical relevance’. If Google is looking at a site to identify what it is about (thus what it should rank for) based on topical relevance then will it associate the topics on the subdomain with the root domain? I have two clients in different positions that I want to find out the answer for: One has a blog on their root domain but the blog is very generic and (I believe) is diluting their topical relevance to a much broader array of topics than is required for the clients core service.
